Drug and Alcohol Dependency

Whilst the NHS estimates that around 9% of men and 3% of women in the UK show signs of alcohol dependence, not all individuals experiencing problems will access professional drug and alcohol services.

I have spent over twenty-five years working in the field of drug and alcohol treatment and am trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Brief Solution Focused Therapy and hold a Diploma in Addiction Studies. I am also trained in EFT and 5-point Detox Acupuncture, holistic therapies that can be useful in the treatment of dependency.

My treatment approach to dependency is multifaceted, combining the skills and knowledge of herbal medicine, EFT and 5-point Detox Acupuncture with therapeutic interventions. Herbs will be prescribed to support the body during reduction and cessation of use, and to support the organs most affected by substance use. At the end of each session you will have the option of accessing EFT or acupuncture. This treatment is also suitable for those wishing to withdraw from prescription drugs as insomnia, anxiety and mood swings are common symptoms of withdrawal.

What will my treatment involve?

I offer a six session semi-structured intervention combining herbal medicine, alcohol/drug focused counselling with EFT and 5-point auricular acupuncture.  The structure of the sessions will be lead by your needs and progress, however each session will include a specific focus.

Session 1

The initial session will involve an assessment of your general health and the problem substance use. I will use alcohol/drug screening tools to understand your patterns of use and dependency. It is important to be aware that it is dangerous to stop drinking alcohol abruptly if you have signs of physical dependence. I may require you to see your GP for further tests or recommend a medically managed detoxification. This session will identify your treatment goal (for example reduction in use or total abstinence).

Session 2

This session will identify your drug/alcohol use pattern and I will provide personalised feedback on possible risks and harms, giving harm reduction information. We will discuss motivation to change and I will provide information on reduction strategies, useful tools and access to peer support in order to help you achieve your goals.

Session 3

This session will examine the cycle of dependency and examine some useful tools in recovery.

Session 4

This session will focus upon feelings and emotions that contribute to substance use and review strategies helpful for reduction or cessation.

Session 5

This session will examine cravings and urges and examine relapse prevention techniques.

Session 6

This is a review session to examine your progress, review your goals and look at continued support options.

Please note if you are drinking alcohol daily at hazardous levels and shown signs of dependency, it is dangerous to abruptly stop use. If you should seek medical advice from your GP or a professional alcohol service.
